GENES ≠ FATE: why a DNA test cannot choose a sport for someone

The “Functions” section of the GENES ≠ FATE atlas addresses whether DNA can be used to choose a sport. Its public page says there is no validated genetic test that reliably predicts a specific person’s athletic result. Heritability does not mean that a few variants determine the outcome: training, health, interest, recovery and environment matter. Panels containing a handful of SNPs therefore should not be used to select athletic talent or prescribe training, especially for children. The section helps distinguish group-level research associations from a tool for individual decisions. For practical choices, it recommends observing actual skills and interest and considering health and functional tests. This is educational reference material within a published project, not an assessment of any individual’s genome. It does not determine aptitude, choose a sports club or replace a clinician or genetic counsellor when a medical question exists. Precise athletic predictions from consumer DNA are not established as a basis for decisions about a particular person.
